Chapter 7

Since their abrupt departure from Cerulia, Zoe remained in the navigator seat next to the pilot's chair as Pietro skillfully worked the controls that sent the Outspan cruiser on a blistering speed past the Cerulak system and into deep space. Zoe eyed the rear view of the craft on a monitor on the ship console, where she saw Cerulia. The system grew ever smaller in the distance. Zoe was filled with a lot of thoughts - regret certainly one of them. While she knew, in her heart, she needed to go after Malone, the other losses already adding up weren't anything she wanted. What if one of those had been Quintus? Just the thought drove a deep chill through Zoe. As a distraction, she eyed the flight controls of the Outspan.

Through her Retooling work, Zoe had become familiar enough with the general layout panels of starcraft, but it was quite different now that she was aboard one out in space. After a few moments of watching the various scopes and indicators that gave information on craft conditions, she turned back to Pietro. "It's so busy."

Pietro smiled. "Never seen a craft in actual flight before, I take it?"

"No, I mean, back in the warehouse, I've fired up and tested components, but one at a time. Seeing the ship in full service, it's-"

Zoe still found herself unable to complete a thought, but she was mesmerized. The concert of alert tones and fluid energy the ship took on its own as it glided through space was a sight for her.

Pietro seemed right at home at the console of the ship and directed the Outspan on a steady arc toward the Far Reach area of Ling Galaxy.

"We must vanish for a bit, to work out our plan," Pietro said. He glanced at Zoe with triumphant eyes over their successful impromptu heist. "That was fun, wasn't it?"

For the moment, Zoe had accepted her status as rescued from a close call. She shifted in her seat. "Not my idea, but I'll take being alive over what they had in mind." She lowered her head.

Pietro watched her with compassion. "It's ok. Yes, you're now an outcast. I've been one for a while now. I get what that's like, believe me. It hurts and can certainly be scary: being an unknown, all by yourself out there. This galaxy doesn't care for those who can't contribute."

"Well, I had a place back there and I just threw it away. You were cast out. There's a difference." Zoe retorted.

Pietro set their craft on autopilot. He leaned back with a deep inhale. Zoe had seen the look before. Pon had shown a similar expression. It usually happened before she launched into a speech about some greater good garbage that she and the rest of the politicians she'd seen on Network do about any number of things. People lost in famines, people who’d succumbed to Veculus, people converted by Malone, these were all part of some master plan to them, acceptable casualties
